Ground and Green
We are presently trying to trace the history of the Ground and green,it is believed to have been at this location since the 1920's.(G Grifiths played for Derbyshire 1934) and the Co-Op social club was opened in Charnwood Street on 10 December 1928 ,before re locating to the new pavilion (see below) It was originally green fields and other sports were played here such as football,Cricket, and tennis. it was the Co-Op sports ground which was eventually sold off for housing. The Derby Congs cricket ground, and Rosehill cricket ground were, and still are in close proximity. Again any info or pictures would be appreciated.
It is known that the present well appointed bowls and social club pavilion ,replaced the wooden hut and part brick construction in 2001 and part of it was moved to the south side of the green as a shelter, and is still there today 2011.The council had previously rejected plans in 1995,1996,,Floodlights were installed in2002.
The ground has hosted: 1946 Derbyshire Merit (I Kitching Rolls Royce) 1959 County Cup Final (Alvaston & Boulton)
1957 Derbyshire Merit (K Butterworth Rolls Royce) 1976 Junior Merit (C Hardwick Swad Caths)

This 1938 ordnance survey map shows the sports grounds area,on the right is Rosehill Meths, which shows a bowling green, left of that is Derby Congs, left of that is the Derby Co-Op sports ground with cricket Pavillion,(bowling green not shown). The left of that shows recreation grounds, this was St Chads.Cricket, tennis, and football, and bowls were all played in this area.
The Map below shows the area in 1951,Tennis courts ran allongside the present hedge of Derby congs, and tennis courts were quite dominant on the St Chads Ground
The Rosehill ground was opened in 1924 on land donated by Alderman A H Domleo, and the Derby Congs ground 1922. The St Chads ground was used by Derby Red Rose Cricket team until 1973.There was a capacious pavillion at the bottom end with tennis courts.Th Co-Op welfare sports ground, was immediately south of St Chads, and a number of teams used this ground, the Dairy team being the last to do so in 1968,they also played footbal in the Derby Wednesday League. The pavilion was firstly an old railway carriage, and laterly a plain wooden structure. In 1968 The allotments were replaced by housing, but the bowls green and old pavilion survived this. Why is not yet known,(any ideas) The area apart from bowls was derilect before, the present housing estate was built in 1990,giving tha area cricket related street names.
